Seventh Chapter & Trickster : Re-birth of the Third Stream

The third-stream movement, first coined by Gunther Schuller in the late 1950’s was used as a term to describe the synthesis of jazz and classical music. However, the movement seems to have been 50 years ahead of its time, with current trends such as post-minimalism, totalism and modern jazz adopting many of its ideologies.
In 2006, trumpeter Clint Allen commissioned local Brisbane composer, Thomas Green to write music for a new chamber ensemble, entitled the ‘Trickster Project’, that mixes modern rock and jazz grooves with traditional classicism. This resulted in an extended suite of music for trumpet, saxophone, cello, piano, electric bass and drums that is truly eclectic, and a profound reflection of contemporary Australian urban life.
